Visa: Check the visa requirements for your country. Many nationalities can enter visa-free or receive a visa on arrival.
Language: The official languages are Kyrgyz and Russian. English is less spoken in rural areas, so learning some basic phrases in Russian or Kyrgyz may be helpful.
Currency: The currency is the som (KGS). It is advisable to have some cash with you on your trip, as not all places accept credit cards.
Health: Make sure you have all the necessary vaccinations and bring a first aid kit. Altitude sickness can occur at higher altitudes; acclimatize slowly.
Safety: Kyrgyzstan is considered a safe country to travel to, but as anywhere, you should keep an eye on your valuables and take the usual precautions.
Culture: Respect local customs and traditions. Dress appropriately, especially when visiting religious sites.
Nature: Be prepared for changeable weather, especially in the mountains. Find out about the hiking trails and be considerate of nature.
Packing list for a trip to Kyrgyzstan (including altitudes from 1000 to 3000 m above sea level)
Clothing: Breathable T-shirts (short and long sleeves), fleece jacket or warm sweater, waterproof jacket, trekking pants (ideally quick-drying), underwear and socks (hiking and normal socks), hat, scarf and gloves (for colder evenings), sun hat or cap, hiking shoes (well broken in), flip-flops or light shoes for indoors.
Equipment: Backpack (at least 50 liters for multi-day hikes), daypack, sleeping bag (suitable for cold nights), sleeping pad, water bottle or hydration system, flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries, trekking poles (optional).
Hygiene items: Toothbrush and toothpaste, soap/shampoo (biodegradable), sunscreen (high SPF), lip balm with UV protection.
Health: Personal medication, first aid kit, altitude sickness medication (e.g. acetazolamide) – consult a doctor beforehand.
Other: Camera/smartphone with charger, power bank, snacks/energy bars for hiking.
